Acupuncture Points not to use in Pregnancy

There are various acupuncture points which are totally contraindicated in pregnancy, therefore it’s important to let your clients know, there if there is any chance that they are pregnant, that these points could cause unintended consequences to the pregnancy. If in doubt, our advice it to avoid them entirely, however, each of these points is powerful and may be the best point to use for that client, so don’t dismiss them, please just use caution.

Spleen 6 (Fig. Below) Regulates menstruation and can induce labour.

Large Intestine 4 (Fig. below) Can induce labour.

Bladder 60 (Fig. Below) Promotes labour.

Gallbladder 21 (Fig. Below) Used for difficult or prolonged labour, promotes expelling of the placenta.

Bladder 31-34 (Fig. Below) Regulate menstruation by moving stagnation, therefore may move a developing foetus.

Ren 2-7 (Fig. Below) Any needling over the lower jiao, especially on the Ren meridian will move Qi, and therefore carries a risk of moving the foetus.

Ren 9-15 (Fig. Below) Any points on the abdomen, especially on the Ren Meridian, will move stagnation in the reproductive system, therefore while useful for preparing the body for pregnancy, can carry a risk of moving a foetus.
